As a child, Seraphina Ashford hears her father order the doctor to save the baby even if her mother dies. Then Cedric moves his longtime mistress Vivian and her daughter Charlotte into the castle, and they seize her mother’s belongings, starve her and scheme to ruin her good name. To get her little brother Adrian out of Vivian’s reach, Seraphina gives Charlotte her chance at court in exchange for his schooling at St. Augustine Royal Academy. Vivian still wants her gone for good and hires assassins, but Seraphina is a step ahead. She fakes her death, strikes a secret deal with a disgraced prince and returns to court as Evelina Vale, right under the noses of the family that wanted her dead.
